Quartet II
This Quartet are four of the six chairs that used to be around the dining table in mu childhood at home. I had two brothers and a sister, so a quartet of children. The chairs were of course the same size and old, but we were not. I depicted this field of tension by depicting four chairs of the same size in a skewed frame, so that the chair that is more spacious in the frame appears smaller and the other one larger.
Escher encontra Ponti
About my first pencil drawing with a chair was ‘Escher in Oirschot‘. A sport that was drawn in front of the front leg, where it actually belonged behind it. A simple procedure with major consequences for me. That ‘Escher intervention’ on this Oirschot chair led to the title mentioned. Escher has become somewhat of a generic name for these kinds of perspective interventions. So when I do that with ‘Superleggera‘ by Gio Ponti they meet (‘encontra’ in Italian).
Babel III
Inspired by the dome of the Pantheon in Rome when you look inside the vault, I have made an attempt to depict that feeling by means of an elaborate stack of chairs. The slightly spinning feeling that you can get in such a large space if you put your head back on your neck and only let the space act on you.

Het 29e portret van een stoel middels de leuning. De eerste negen in deze reeks dateren alweer van 2011 daarna was het ‘stil’ op dit gebied tot in 2017 er negen nieuwe verschenen. In 2018 gevolgd door nog eens twaalf en tot slot in 2019 nog eens drie. Ze worden door mij meestal gegroepeerd getoond of ook wel als kleinere accenten tussen andere potloodtekeningen. Reflection
A chair mirrors, the more the entire diptych is mirrored. The next step in a series of works in which mirroring is the key. Spiegel and Spiegel II are other examples.
